    Resin Column/What is Flame-Retardant?

Resin Column/What is Flame-Retardant? ________________________________________ The terms incombustible, flame-retardant, flame-proof, and fire-resistant are similar but have slightly different roles. • Incombustible: A material that does not burn when lit. Typical examples include glass and metal. • Flame-retardant: A material that can catch fire but does not spread easily. • Flame-proof: A material that can catch fire but extinguishes itself when the fire source is removed and does not spread easily. • Fire-resistant: A term used for "buildings and structures." It is a performance designed to not break down in the event of a fire, or to maintain its function for a certain period of time. At first glance, the terms are very similar, but there are strict differences. ________________________________________ < About UL94, the flame retardant standard for resins > UL94 of the United States is widely used as a representative standard for evaluating the flame retardancy of resins. In this standard, fire is applied to a resin plate, and the flame retardancy is evaluated in 6 stages (HB to 5VA) based on the state of combustion. [Premise] Fire is applied to a resin plate, and the grade is judged based on the burning time, the falling of the spark, and the presence of holes. < Main criteria (image) > • HB: Fire is applied, and the grade is judged based on the burning time and burning speed. • V-2: Fire burns when lit, and the burned spark drops. • V-1: Fire burns when lit, but the spark does not fall. • V-0: Burns but does not remove tinder, shorter burning time than V-1 • 5VB: Burns but does not remove tinder. However, if directly seared with strong flame, holes will appear • 5VA: Burns but does not remove tinder, highest grade without holes even if seared with strong flame *In actual tests, detailed conditions such as burning time and number of times are specified, but here is only an overview. As for the level of flame retardancy, HB < V-2 < V-1 < V-0 < 5VB < 5VA It is easy to understand if you imagine that the flame retardancy is higher as you move to the right. ________________________________________ < Specific Applications by UL94 Grade > • HB: Applications with low flame retardancy requirements Packaging materials, home appliance exteriors, building panels, general plastic parts, etc. • V-2: Applications requiring light electrical safety Small home appliance parts, switch covers, parts inside home appliances, etc. • V-1: General level for electronic equipment Electrical component cases, power unit parts, motor covers, etc. • V-0: Standard level required for electronic equipment This level is required as a standard for many electrical and electronic equipment. PC and TV housings, connectors, battery holders, etc. • 5VB: For high-energy electrical equipment Applied to parts used under stricter conditions.    Electric control panels, power supply cases, electrical components of industrial equipment, etc. • 5VA: Applications requiring particularly high reliability for fire safety Used for critical parts used in high-energy environments close to fire sources. High-voltage equipment, EV battery cases, aircraft parts, etc. ________________________________________ < Introduction to SEKISUI SEIKEI Co., Ltd.'s Flame-Retardant PP Sheet > Finally, we will briefly introduce SEKISUI SEIKEI Co., Ltd.'s flame-retardant resin products. SEKISUI SEIKEI Co., Ltd., has a line of flame-retardant PP sheets. The flame-retardant grades correspond to "UL 94" HB to V-0 and can be selected according to the application. • They have excellent electrical insulation and do not cause hydrolysis. • This material complies with stricter environmental regulations and does not contain the six substances regulated by the RoHS Directive. • It can be proposed as an alternative material for various flame retardant specifications. • We can provide individual responses including design aspects such as color toning and embossed patterns. We are already used by many customers in a wide range of fields such as electrical and electronic equipment, automobiles, and building materials, as introduced in this article. Products made from Polyvinyl Chloride(PVC) are also flame retardant, but we do not conduct UL testing for all our company products. Article/Bag-in-Box Containers: A Sustainable Solution for Efficient Liquid Packaging

Bag-in-Box (BIB) is an innovative packaging solution designed for storing and transporting liquids safely and efficiently.Known for its convenience and eco-friendliness, Bag-in-Box systems are increasingly adopted across diverse industries — from food and beverages to industrial chemicals. In this article, we explain the structure, advantages, environmental impact, and applications of Bag-in-Box containers, as well as introduce SEKISUI SEIKEI’s “Rontainer”, our proprietary BIB solution trusted by global manufacturers. What Is a Bag-in-Box (BIB)? A Bag-in-Box consists of two main components: Inner bag (Bag) – A flexible liner made from polyethylene (PE) or multi-layer film that securely holds the liquid. Outer box (Box) – A rigid outer shell made from cardboard or plastic that protects the bag during transport and handling. This dual-layer structure combines high liquid retention and excellent transport durability, making Bag-in-Box an ideal choice for liquids that require clean, leak-free packaging. Advantages of Bag-in-Box Packaging One of the biggest advantages of Bag-in-Box containers is their ease of handling and storage efficiency.Unlike rigid containers, BIBs can be folded flat before filling and after use, which significantly reduces storage space requirements and waste volume. The sturdy outer box allows safe transport without spillage, while the lightweight structure minimizes transportation costs and improves operational efficiency from filling to disposal. Environmental Benefits Bag-in-Box packaging contributes to sustainability in multiple ways: Lightweight and compact design reduces fuel consumption during transportation. Lower CO₂ emissions compared with traditional rigid containers. Reduced waste volume after disposal thanks to its collapsible structure. As a result, BIBs are recognized as a highly eco-friendly packaging solution that aligns with global efforts toward carbon neutrality and resource efficiency. Applications of Bag-in-Box Containers Bag-in-Box systems are used in a wide range of industries, including: Food and beverage: Seasonings, syrups, oils, and dairy products. Article/Clean Containers for High‑Purity Chemicals: Ideal for Storage and Transport

High‑purity chemicals are essential in semiconductor manufacturing and electronic materials. To maintain quality throughout storage and transportation, selecting the right clean containers is crucial. “Clean containers” are produced in controlled environments with low particulate levels and use materials that minimize leaching of metallic or other contaminants. Below, we explain why clean containers are key to preserving purity in chemicals and how to choose them. Characteristics & Challenges of High‑Purity Chemicals High-purity chemicals must maintain extremely high levels of purity, as even minute impurities can significantly affect product quality. Consistent quality control throughout the entire process—from production to final use—is essential. ・Contamination control Even trace impurities can compromise product quality. Choose containers with excellent sealing and minimize exposure by handling them in clean environments. ・Environmental sensitivity High‑purity chemicals often react to changes in temperature, humidity, or light. Proper environmental controls are necessary during storage and transport. ・Vibration and impact resistance Movement during transport can jeopardize chemical integrity. Containers made from shock-resistant materials and compliant with UN regulations help safeguard contents. How to Choose Clean Containers 1.Material compatibilitySelect container materials that are chemically inert with the stored chemical, and that do not leach into the contents. 2.Particulate controlContainers should be manufactured in low‑particulate environments. Depending on the chemical, containers may also be pre-washed before use. 3.Design & structureLook for features like airtight lids, structural strength, ergonomic handling, and designs that minimize residuals. For hazardous chemicals, ensure the container meets UN transport standards. 4.Size and capacity matchingMatch container size to your needs—whether lab-scale or production-scale. Using the same material for R&D and scale-up can streamline container validation and reduce lead time. Sekisui’s Clean Container Solutions 1.High-grade polyethylene materialsSekisui’s inner linings use polyethylene with minimal metal leaching, offering strong resistance to various chemicals. 2.Strict particulate controlIn Sekisui’s clean manufacturing facilities, cleanliness is tightly monitored. For example, 200 L clean drums are produced in environments where ≤ 10 particles ≥ 0.5 µm per mL are present 3.UN‑rated designs & low leftover volumesSekisui offers a complete lineup—from sub‑1 L clean bottles to 200 L drums—all compliant with UN hazardous‑goods shipping standards.
