Tatami Mats: A Culture Unique to Japan

Tatami mats are a unique part of Japan’s culture, and they have been passed down through the ages as floor coverings that perfectly match the conditions prevalent throughout the four seasons in Japan. The history of tatami dates back to the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters; Japan’s oldest historical record), and it is presumed that floor coverings processed from straw were used at that time. The current custom of covering an entire room with tatami mats first appeared during the Muromachi Era, and kneeling on the floor became popular in accordance with the spread of tea houses.

The recent popularity of adopting European or American lifestyles in Japan is resulting in it being rare to come across Japanese-style rooms. However, the custom of placing thin tatami mats on top of wooden flooring, as was common during the Heian Era, is gradually being revived.

The upper surface of tatami mats (goza) uses woven rushes, which is sponge-like and springy in consistency and produces a special texture that produces a pleasant sensation when it comes into contact with skin. It absorbs moisture, making it most suitable for high-temperature, high-humidity Japanese climate which has cool summer and warm winter.

Sekisui’s MIGUSA is a modern-day tatami mat that retains the high-functionality of a pleasant texture and touch.

It is our hope that the comfort of Japan’s traditional tatami mats can also be enjoyed in modern-day homes. The quest that Sekisui set for itself has been to provide tatami mats that are gentle on the skin, comfortable, safe, and that anybody can enjoy. In addition to the conventional comfort that tatami mats provide, Sekisui’s MIGUSA are modern tatami mats with superior levels of functionality in such areas as durability, safety and broad-ranging color patterns.
